Former 'Big Time Rush' star Kendall Schmidt premieres his new band's single at USA TODAY.
Timing plays a huge part in Kendall Schmidt's new band and single. The former Big Time Rush star premieres Heffron Drive's Parallel with USA TODAY. The single will be available for digital download Tuesday through Schmidt's TOLbooth Records label.
Heffron Drive, which Schmidt formed with guitarist Dustin Belt, actually preceded Big Time Rush, which had its own series on Nickelodeon from 2009 through 2013 and released three albums. The two musicians met at a film screening, bonded over their shared roots in Wichita, then realized they lived just four houses away from each other in Burbank, Calif. — on Heffron Drive.
"The idea is that you've been there for each other for a long time, but it doesn't seem to work out," Schmidt says. "In the song, everything comes together — the stars align, and true love can unfold."
Schmidt wrote the song with Toby Gad, who also produced the record. They've been working together since the Big Time Rush days, Schmidt says.
"Parallel's a happy medium between the two styles, because there's guitar, which I play, then there's electronic music, which I love," Schmidt says. "That's sort of why I picked that one to begin with. Now, every time I end up writing something, I take a lot of time thinking about how much will be band elements and how much will be electronic. I guess I'm trying to find a happy medium between the two."
In that sense, Parallel points the way to the rest of the Heffron Drive tunes Schmidt and Belt are making.
"I'm compiling a whole catalog at the moment," Schmidt says. "If someone said I had to, I could probably three songs right now. As far as putting an album together, I probably have 10 or 11, but some are in various stages of finishing."
Heffron Drive introduced some of its music earlier this month at Austin's South by Southwest festival. The group plans to tour the USA this summer, following with fall shows in Europe and Asia.
Why you need to listen to Heffron Drive’s single right now!
Remember the hotties of Big Time Rush? Obvs! Although the show may have ended, the dudes are just beginning their awesome new careers. Take Kendall Schmidt, who is one half of the duo Heffron Drive. While the pair started making music way before BTR’s existence, they’re only now about to show what they can do.
Their single, “Parallel,” is out today and it’s a song you’re going to want to listen to all. The. Time! Like his character on BTR, Kendall is a self-described “hopeless romantic” In the single, he fantasizes about the stars aligning in love, and everything just falling into place. “I’ve traveled all over the world and have had this feeling that [the person meant for me] could be someone I already met,” he explained. “I always wonder if the one that you’re supposed to be with is someone who is right in front of you all along.”
The song is just a little preview of all the amazingness sure to be on the album. And with a cutie like Kendall, you know there are going to be mega swoon-worthy hits to come!
