Discussion: How much should digital albums cost?

Do you think the current prices of digital albums are reasonable? If you don't think so, What would be the proper prices of them?

Ideally $4.99-$6.99. If all you're giving me are digital files, why should I pay the same amount for that when I could get a physical disc that I could burn to multiple computers, a booklet, and a case to keep them in? Mess.

If artists reduced their prices down to that + made songs that aren't singles 'album only' songs, I feel albums sales would rise. Maybe nothing THAT big, but it would be noticeable.

Albums as a whole need to be WAY cheaper. Record labels are delusional thinking they can keep charging a high price for them. Music is essentially free now, but albums (digital AND physical) are pretty much the same price they were in the 90s, during the heyday of album sales. They should have been lowered in order to encourage greater sales.

I don't think an album should cost beyond, like, $8 dollars. Max. And considering it costs NOTHING to create a digital album, they shouldn't be more than $5 dollars. Over here, an album can costs about $15 to $20 dollars for new releases. In my home country (in Asia) an album can cost anywhere between $30 to $50. It's insane. No wonder people are choosing free streaming over actual buying.

Meh. I am fine with the pricing for the most part. Though anything over 12.99 is really iffy.

There is no overhead cost for a digital file. From what I've read however, not a significant chunk of that revenue goes to the artist. Apparently iTunes, Amazon, or whoever is selling the file(s) keeps the majority of that money. The next largest amount goes to the record label. It is no surprise then that Amazon has many albums on sale for 4.99 (and less) at all times.

I honestly, never look at the price of a album I buy on Itunes. It's never more than 20$ so whats the big deal?

But, let's be honest, at least one third of those songs tend to be filler. Albums until not long ago had maybe 10-12 songs tops. It should go back to that. 10 good to great songs for maybe 4.99-6.99. Having all those secondary tracks leads buyers, especially the younger ones without much disposable income, to cherry-pick tracks or buy just the singles. The record labels end up losing in the end. The days of moving 6 to 10 million copies of many albums in one year are long gone.
