2-3GB. We have a shared plan with Verizon where 6GB is split between the 4 of us, but that's more than enough since my mom and her boyfriend never use data and my sister doesn't use much either.
But when I went to Florida in January, I used like 5GB from tethering because our stupid condo only had ethernet which my MacBook doesn't have

I got in trouble for running up the overage fees.

Cable providers typically throttle your speeds when you've downloaded 250GB of data in a month. Some companies have been getting shady and throttling speeds when using websites like Netflix because it burns through so much data though.
