He did because, to my understanding, it's like a stock, you sell it while it's at it's peak value. He wasn't getting continuous income from all her endeavors (such as touring), he just owned a share in her brand that he was able to sell for a huge sum of money when it was worth it's peak price. So he made way more by cashing out then he could have by staying.

I think he's trying to appear as if he left because he knew her ship would sink. And to appear as if he's still got tons of money and fame, but Akon hasn't had a true big smash hit since 2009/2010 and I think I'm stretching it.
