Police said their suspect boarded the bus and initially tried to pay with a pre-paid card which had no money left on it. He launched himself at the driver after being told he couldn't pay his fare with a $50 note.
CCTV images captured inside the bus shows the man boarding the bus and trying to pay, then attacking the driver.
Insp Austin praised the bus driver for responding to the attack by moving towards the door of his vehicle, protecting his passengers from possible violence.
