Even Gaga's website says it :
"The Born This Way Ball is Lady Gaga’s first tour since the release of her album Born This Way (Streamline/Konlive/Interscope), which has sold nearly 6 million copies worldwide since its release in May 2011."
http://www.ladygaga.com/news?page=6 ("LADY GAGA ANNOUNCES THE NORTH AMERICAN LEG OF THE BORN THIS WAY BALL!")
And Mediatraffic said last year that BTW has sold 6.1M copies worldwide. I'm confused...
And other ARTPOP sales :
Canada - 80.206
France - 60.400
Italy - 26.549
Japan : 186.971
South Korea : 3.852 (1st week)
United States : 667.087 | UMG's report is connected to Gaga's label and they say that it sold 6.8M WW by November 2011. Chart News tweeted that it sold 7M and Billboard reported 8M.

Realistically it has passed 7M WW.  |

Logically we should go by shipments anyway, lbr - the label doesn't give back $ for CDs left on shelves.   |

 | Yes but she could be refering to shipments.
I believe that they are sales, it's not like every market reports their sales to an unofficial site like mediatraffic    |

The certifications that artists take some times during concerts or whatever are based on shipments too. Sometimes the difference is small and sometimes big but the record companies are selling those copies so it's all matters for the record company.  |

That's why record labels keep unfaesably large reserves. Overshipping is also a tactic used to distort quarterly financial statements (like EMI a few years ago). The discrepancy between actual sales and shipments is concerning for UMG.  |
