I understand her persona might have something to do with it but if a song is meant to be a hit, it will be, and look at Applause and DWUW, it's not like people are ditching Gaga completely but maybe they just aren't interested enough in the music to buy the album. It's always easy to blame it on Born This Way than to admit Gaga went on a media blackout and came out with a lyrically off-putting album the GP isn't here for. I love it, of course, but at the end of the day it comes down to what the majority demands and ARTPOP is not it. Many stars have had underwhelming eras and manage to smash with their next albums, see Beyoncé, so "ARTPOP is suffering Born This Way's damage" is not cutting it for me. I'm using the same logic to say maybe Gaga will smash after ARTPOP, but we'll have to see.
