I know the "it doesn't follow the books" or whatever argument gets old, but Days Of Future Past is such an iconic comic book arc, that watching it get butchered like this is going to be hard to watch. Its one of those plots that just every comic book fan knows about.

Ellen Paige's Kitty in the movies wouldn't be alive in 1973. To be fair, sending Wolverine back makes sense in that he doesn't age like an average person and for better or worse he's the star of the franchise so he gets butts in the seats. Singer has said Wolverine takes a backseat to Xavier in this movie, that it's about how Charles has to find his way to become Professor Xavier.
In terms of butchering the comic stories, all Marvel movies do it. X-Men are just the most consistent at it!
