Possibly. I know alot people who are closeted to some family members (grandparents and etc.) And they'll leave it blank and some people do it because they don't really like to be labelled.
And then there are some people who just want people to find put themselves or don't think it may not be anyone's business.

If you want to find out his sexuality, just talk about your exes and/or former crushes. It'll open up a lot of doors and he may share about his ex boyfriend (or ex girlfriend ) and you'll find out if he's batting for your team or rather go deep sea fishing
Well, I think there is a chance he is a closet case. Not many gays decide to put "women" in their profiles. But I wouldn't judge anyone based on that it they only put their gender and birthdate in, you choose it during registration. However, if his Facebook profile is full of nasty **** like inspirational quotes, people who inspire me, etc. then it's suspicious.
