In a past interview with Complex magazine, Queensbridge rapper Nas was quoted as saying “I think Kanye West saved rap” after he was asked about Lil Wayne being dubbed the best rapper alive. Nas revisited that particular quote this month during a Complex-led conversation with Steve Stoute and Ben Horowitz at South By Southwest.

According to Nas, Kanye has moved past saving Hip Hop and is now on an artistic mission.

In addition to speaking on the G.O.O.D. Music emcee, Nas gave credit to artists in the South and on the West Coast for representing the next generation of Hip Hop.

“I think his mission no longer is to save Hip Hop,” Nas said. “I think he’s on an artistic mission. He wants to express himself. So, who’s saving Hip Hop today is the new generation. And it’s brothers like myself and brothers like Jay who still got love for this thing. You know, street dudes who’s going to another level and still have the realness at heart. It’s the dudes in the South. It’s the West Coast explosion that’s happening right now in L.A. You gotta give credit where credit’s due. To the next generation for sure.”

He made that album because it was in fact dead more specifically NY Hip-Hop. And it still is.

And I agree with him. You don't hear that much from NY anymore as it was in the early 00s, 90s, 80s, where it originated from. I have this talk with my bro all the time. It seems like Hip-Hop has moved on from NY and is heard from all parts of the US [besides NY], right now the West Coast and the South.

Which is not a bad thing imo but for real Hip-Hop lovers I think they just feel really salty about it. There is no real movement just random rappers creating club bops and twerking tracks. Nobody is checking for NY anymore, besides Jay [who's negligible as it's given that he will do well cause his huge fanbase and respect but is from an older generation], and maybe French, but that's already a stretch.

I think were talking about 2 different things right now...The person I was responding too was saying what's up with the hip hop needs saving talk and I was explaining that Nas publicly declared it was dead, which is why they would ask him that question.

Jay never said something like hip hop needs to be saved...You won't see him sayin one person saved hip hop...people don't usually ask him who is saving hip hop...they might ask him what he thinks of the landscape of it.
