Like a Prayer, Erotica, and American Life are the riskiest releases by a major pop star. Nothing else compares. BEYONCÉ might be considered a risk in terms of sales projections, but that's basically it. It's not taboo to talk about sex anymore.

Exactly. She risked the wrath of an entire nation by publically lashing out at a lifestyle lived and loved up by millions and got banned on radio.

P!nk was told not to make M!ssundaztood, the label was afraid it would alienate her small r&b fanbase, she made it anyway and multiplied that fanbase by a large factor.

For different reasons. Madonna was oversaturating the public with sex and Beyoncé released an album out of nowhere, one that she paid for herself... at only one retailer.

This. Like A Prayer, Erotica & American Life are more risky than anything any majorpop girl has and likely will ever done

BEYONCÉ an album (musically) wasn't a risk although the music is a bold step. It's not risky because it's really good, really current yet very unique which makes it very appealing. The risk was in the release (having it sell to only one retailer, having it be released on a Friday morning, releasing with 0 promo, etc.)

In regards to Beyonce's risky albums 4 is a much more example. From the intense first single to the album tracks, while great overall, they were really left-field in regards to the genres on the album. She used a lot of world references and didn't bother to follow the dance pop trend which at the time was super pervasive. 2011 had more of a mono-music-culture than 2013 did. It still found success in it's core market though (Love on Top was the #1 song of 2012), but even still it was old-school-R&B and didn't fit into the type of R&B songs that were popular on R&B radio stations.

Born This Way and she ultimately failed and got the short end of the stick. It's why I don't get why so many people are obsessed with their fav being "RISKY!!A1@#!@" because it could shorten their career and lessen their status dramatically.
