Discussion: Will Christian people start to accept homosexuality?

So I attend a Catholic school and required to take a Theology class. So today, we made an outline about a chapter on prejudice. I was reading through the book and filling in the blanks, and came across the section of 'homosexuality'. The book basically said that people of a homosexual orientation were stereotyped in a degrading way and being an object to discrimination, and how ignorance stems from the discrimination. They also said that it is proven that homosexuals do NOT choose their orientation, when I thought many religious people (including my dad) believed that it is a choice. My teacher told me he will discuss in front of the whole class (there's like 100 kids). I'm curious to see how they react.

Do you think Christianity, including the people of religion, will start to accept it?

I go to a Catholic school and they already accept it and have told us not to discriminate because homosexual s do not choose their orientation.

This is my first year going to a Catholic school, so I was unaware of how they felt about it. I go to Church and most people there are against homosexuality

My church as well, but they are very old fashioned and traditional. They are ignorant. Do u like Ur school?

I think overall they they will but sadly there'll always be some who won't. It's hard to change peoples perceptions.

Eventually, absolutely. The religious leaders will see that public perception has changed so much, and religion(what they're selling) will adapt it's message to draw in as many believers(customers) as possible, like any business would. In the US it's a steady and gradual increase every year, old bigots are dying and the young come of age with homosexuality being less and less of a taboo, more exposure and ultimately less ****s to give about it. This isn't new, organized religion has done it with slavery, women's rights, etc.

In my country lots of Christians accept homosexuality.
It's the other religions that have more troubles with it.

I went to a catholic high school and elementary and they always accepted it. We even had a few classes on it.

Where people get the stereotype that Catholics are unaccepting are using brushing stereotypes.

In many Western countries, especially the US for example, Catholicism is actually the version of Christianity that has the most people support gay marriage; only Judaism beat us.

For Catholics, I think the Pope just mentioning making an attempt to be more understanding is going to make the older generation's ears prick up while most of the youth doesn't care already.

That's my viewpoint as a Catholic, as for Protestants I think it's the same situation of the youth bringing up the rear only without a clear human "leader" like the Pope.

That's good to hear. I suppose so.

Attitudes are quickly (not quickly enough though) changing in the last century. As cruel as it sounds, as older individuals in power with a different mindset pass on, more than likely the ones who take their place might be more accepting. Or at least less hateful.

I didn't mean to sound like I was generalizing. I'm sure there are accepting people in the religion, mostly Catholics from what I've seen from the replies. It's just that I was raised strictly Christian environment and against homosexuality. Finding out that I was gay was a great thing. It really made me open my mind up.

Yes, but for the ones that don't: you have to hold them accountable because for too long people use their faith as an excuse to discriminate and act like it's reasonable. They need to realize their discrimination comes from them, NOT from their religion (no one sees anyone protesting sex before marriage despite being one of the most repeated laws in the Bible).

I think until this distinction is important to make in terms of getting acceptance from religious people.

Religion has made gay people's lives miserable for hundreds of years all over the world... Do you really blame them?

Religion hasn't, religious people have.

Yes, fighting fire with fire leads to nothing, I blame them for it. The same way people laugh off claims about blasphemy is how people laugh off claims about equality.

Most people I know, Christian and not, are quite alright with gay people, but many of the religious leaders I know, though they harbor no hate for gays (or even gay culture; some of them use sayings like "g0rl" and "YAS" and "work" regularly) are still not okay with the practice of gay sex. That kind of sex is forbidden in this belief system, but we're not taught to hate people who don't share our belief system.
