The fumes that it's become abundantly clear that whether it was done before or not, whether or not the artist(s) doing so is doing it exactly like Beyoncé doesn't matter -- Bey's was a media event and by far the most impactful. Any album being released with little or no notice is going to be compared in some way to the way Beyoncé released and that will likely be the case for the foreseeable future.
I am noticing more and more artists going the little/no notice route or is it the same and just that more and more (relevant) media outlets care to report on those stories because of the Beyoncé angle? Either way, what she did stuck with people. Definite impact.
Billboard.com Skrillex Surprises With 'Recess' Album Release
Skrillex now has more in common with Beyoncé than a pile of Grammys. They both like to release surprise albums. Starting on the evening of March 10, the dubstep prince unlocked access to one song after another until all 11 tracks of his forthcoming debut album, “Recess.” had been unleashed unto the world.
And you all said this wasn't a Beyonce. Would Billboard lie?
