everyone says the same old obscure, vague statements.
"both have weaknesses and strong sides"
"Kelly...her range alone"
"Kelly is the true vocalist"
post Beyonce video "kelly could never do this"
"Beyonce is the standard"
"Beyonce's runs >>"
It's like you all are incapable of explaining yourselves when it comes to threads like this. I don't understand why?? This is the reason why I went into depth in the OP.
Singing is both an art and a skill, so to be a truly great voice you need to have great musicality and interpretive ability, coupled with a great technique and resultant vocal quality..
Great, so let's discuss Kelly's immense strength when belting above D5, or the way she phrases her low notes, or the quality of her middle voice; her defining rasp, how she caresses the notes when she's emotionally connected.
Let's discuss Beyonce's insane agility, how she uses dynamics to enhance her notes while singing "lyrical" lines, or about how her voice changes in texture and color as she ascends the scale. This is how we make assessments about their voices..But no ATRL wants to argue and shade.
and say stuff like "Kelly...and it's not even close" It's just frustrating that people make threads like these without EVER actually discussing the content!
I get what you're saying, but to be fair, it's quite possible (at least in my case) that we've already exhausted the discussion in the "Beyonce vs Kelly" / "Best Current Vocalist" (which always boils down to Bey vs Kelly) threads that are made every other day
In a nutshell, Bey's technical superiority has granted her allowed her to exhibit a more impressive range, certainly relative to her vocal fach. Her lows are stronger and more well supported (expected in a mezzo vs soprano debate), I'd say her mid belted range up to around ~D5ish is easily is clearly stronger. Things are pretty even around Eb5-F5, and Kelly is clearly stronger from F#5 on up.
The clearly damning thing for Kelly is that as a soprano (both being lyric voices) she SHOULD have a much better head voice, or at least one area up there where she excels over bey, but that is not the case (rather, it is the opposite). She really only wins in one category, her upper belting range. This is of course not bringing in things like melisma, where Beyonce has dozens of well-documented coloratura feats, and where Kelly is... capable, but not quite in the league of a Bey, Mariah, or even Brandy/Jessie, etc.
And inb4 "tone" "emoting" etc.

I don't even know how to recognize a D5 and C5 and G5. The good thing that makes Kelly look better as a vocalist is that she never lipsyncs.
All three of the commonly accepted "Vocal Trinity" (Whitney, Mariah and Celine) have lipped, the latter two more than incidentally admittedly. Would you say that makes Kelly a better vocalist than them? Katy Perry always sings live (for better or worse), what about ha? This is all assuming Kelly's NEVER in her career lipped -- I can't expect everyone to be as honest about their faves as I am with mine, but I'll take KC fans' word for it since I'm not familiar with her live performances throughout her career the way they are.
I've seen some of the vocal threads here and every single one resulted to "preference" because of ATRL's inability to remain objective. If a singer displays more technical prowess than another singer (with a sound sense of interpretive wit) wouldn't that aspect of singing make them TECHNICALLY better?? The musicianship part shows the singers artistry with their instrument, which can also be anchored with factual substance. Anything else would be deemed subjective, would it not?
Different people value and put hierarchies on certain vocal techniques. It will always boil down to preference.

I didn't mean she's the best because she never lips (there were times when she really needed to but still refused to do so). I don't know, it just makes her look better in my eyes. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong but you can have 7 octaves and sound bad. Kelly barely has 4 and is said to be one of the best vocalists by many.
Speaking of Katy Perry... lets focus on her bright sides. She's pretty.

THIS. Kelly slaughters Bey when it comes to those upper belts, and no one can ****ing sustain like Kelly Clarkson. She's not human. But Beyoncé has her beat in the lower register and in head voice. She's also a vocal acrobat when it comes to riffs and runs. I think at the end of the day Beyoncé can do more with her voice than Kelly, although Kelly has literally the craziest belting and sustaining ability of any female in pop today (including Christina, Demi, Carrie, etc.)
I guess I overestimated this thread, a bit. I was looking for some great discussions. I realize now that most people here don't have the general knowledge to really speak on topics like these. Hence the "insert fave here" "larger range always wins" "belting=superiority" type of replies. My bad!

I got the chance to see Bey live, when she came to my city, and honestly she blew me away!! Great live performer, and this is coming from a die-hard Kelly fan who is yet to see her live........again it comes down to who you prefer, because BOTH are untouched vocally! if you wanna go all technical I would rather hear Kelly's upper belts over Bey's, but that takes nothing away from her, she will still be the best performer I've seen live( yet)!
It's still not the worst. I hate when people come like *insert your fave here* is the best singer/vocalist/performer of our generation/all time just becuase she's their fave.
TBH I feel like over half the time I see someone praising Beyoncé, that is what they are doing.
Beyoncé. As usual. When Bey & Kelly are paired up against each other, Kelly her stans always bring out the essays. But to be short, Kelly is limited and her range isn't as big as her stans would like to think.
And I personally don't like her tone.

Her range is pretty big, especially her belting range. I don't think anyone is just saying that without doing some research.
Kelly. There's something in Beyonce's tone I don't quite like all the way. Kelly's is perfectly breathy and refreshing and raspy all wrapped in a perfect pop rock package.
