Blackout is not nearly as innovative as its always heralded to be, it sounds like a reflection of its time, not a glimpse into the future. But is it one of her best albums? Yes. As I believe Femme Fatale to be as well. Because Femme Fatale is everything Britney stands for, infectiously fun shallow dance/pop with blatant commercial sexuality. Its like Blackout's bubblegum sister.
Circus imo, isn't a terrible record (like BJ) but its bland for being a Britney Spears album. The bridges are all lacking, its kind of just the run off from Blackout gone in a significantly less interesting direction. Yet its ALWAYS and I mean ALWAYS heralded by fans, imo because it was the first time she properly promoted an album and her first era since In the Zone where it seemed like there was genuine effort put in. I get that. But did the album and her tour meet up? Not to me.

I think the problem with FF for me is that it literally comes across like every track was just handed to her very quickly and like she wasn't present for them or the era. That is more of what I meant by "tailor made"... kind of what would happen to a new artist who just came out of AI or something -- throw as many by-the-numbers hits against the wall and hope that something sticks. As a major pop star obviously the goal of her albums is to get hits. FF though was one of the most noticeable times though where she really seemed like she had no idea what was going on and was just on auto-pilot.
While I adore Blackout, I don't think it is as sonically innovative as ITZ, but I think the aggressive/IDGAF approach to a lot of the tracks was so fitting for her persona at the time that it was (albeit inadvertently in a lot of ways) quite representative of her at the time, especially in hindsight. I do think tracks like "Freakshow" and "Toy Soldier" were a bit more forward thinking than most others though. Overall, I feel like the tone of Blackout is what makes it brilliant.
I completely agree that Circus is unjustly praised to the high heavens. It didn't click with me on that same level either, but it seemed like it brought it's own share of fans back to her for a bit so I guess for her sake that's great. However, as an album, it's uneven by her standards. Definitely has some gems though (namely: "Blur", "Mannequin", "Womanizer").
