BBC Three: channel to be closed to save BBC Four
The comedy channel will be moved online despite comedians and writers leading a Save BBC Three campaign
BBC Three programming will no longer be available on TV as the channel is axed as part of the corporation's plans to save £100 million.
The BBC reports that an official statement will be made on Thursday. It is expected that director-general Tony Hall will save the culture-orientated BBC Four in place of the comedy and youth-focused channel as part of plans to save the BBC £100 million. BBC Three will not disappear completely, but will retain its brand online where its programming will be shown through iPlayer.
The plans will only go through if they are approved by the BBC Trust, which represents the interests of licence fee payers and decided to save BBC Radio 6 Music in 2010 after former director general Mark Thompson planned to close it.
Hall said: "We decided we'd reached the point where salami-slicing would affect quality and distinctiveness. Rather than seek to preserve a less good version of our past, we decided to focus on what we do best: from drama to taking iPlayer into the next generation."
BBC Three is responsible for comedies such as Gavin and Stacey as well as reality programming including Don't Tell The Bride.

No. I hope this doesn't actually happen.
Family Guy, American Dad, Russell Howard's Good News, Some Girls, Gavin & Stacey etc. Some of my favourite programmes are on BBC Three. I don't get why they don't just axe BBC Four instead; hardly anybody watches that.
Such a bad decision. They need to embrace young viewers.
There is a petition to save the channel which can be signed here:
