Nor does it mean a person isn't emoting. Bum notes and screechy belts don't equate to emoting either. In fact it probably takes away from any emotion they're trying to express because it hurts so much to sing.

Every singer has to concentrate on what they're doing with their voice (it's their instrument), so i'm not sure why everyone feels like "emoting" should be a priority. Anyway, it probably should come naturally with certain songs and it does with most technically advanced singers. They don't have to put quite as much effort in sustaining any notes that might have been reached inappropriately. Non-technical singers have trouble with this and their performances suffer.

Dead @ you thinking Xtina was ever a threat to Mariah. A delusional mess. Mariah has always been complimentary to younger talented vocalists, who possess humility and respect for the art of singing. It's not Beyoncé's fault she gets more universal praises, from the legends(Prince, MJ, Mariah, Whitney, Barbara, Prince, Bono, etc) to the critics.

Sometimes being too technical ruins vulnerability in a song.
You want to be technical in most songs, but when it comes to sad, vulnerable songs, being pitch perfect with no depth doesn't help.

It's definitely a compliment about Voice control, but also a backhanded one when it's regarding soul.

Adele isn't always 100% perfect on 21, but that's why people love it. She sometimes lets her rasp get too strong, she doesn't always catch enough breath for the next line, but it's because you can hear how she feels when she singing it, rather than reading notes on a page

Whitney and Mariah are fantastic emoters and technical singers. Beyonce has an almost seemless technique too but she doesn't do it for me. It's entirely subjective anyway; you'll have the vocal nazis on one side of the spectrum loathing bad technique and then you'll have the average layman with little to no knowledge of technique and they'll be captivated by terrible vocalists.

Beyoncé, without a doubt.

Neither does off key singing and straining for basic simple notes.

Indeed it is. If this poll was posted on a forum full of professional vocal teachers you'll likely see the complete opposite results. It's mostly subjective really.

I understand that some of Mariah's studio material would be seen as 'emotionless' because they were very polished, i.e. Hero, but she made up for it with live performances. However, I think the criteria of 'emoting' is so diffuse that it basically just comes down to preference. I think that Mariah emotes really well on Butterfly, My All and I Still Believe, others might disagree.

In any event, I just don't like the misconception that great vocals immediately equals emotionless music. Like

Celine Dion would be my first guess though. Whitney is kinda hit or miss for me. I feel like a lot of their ballady album tracks are more about vocal dynamics than anything (All The Man That I Need for instance).

I might subconsciously be giving Mariah the upper hand because I know she writes her own songs. The lyrics she sings actually come from her, making everything more believable. Like if you know Mariah's story, one would probably have a better understanding for what songs like Butterfly and Outside are actually about.
