Some people will continue to say ignorant things even if you do let them know that you are gay yourself. Don't get it confused. They might cloak it a little bit by saying "it's how I was raised" or "it's my religion" but the bottom line is a lot of people will not budge even if a loved one is part of the gay community. They tolerate but don't accept. So I'm not sure if I agree with her completely. Telling people about your sexuality is sadly still counter productive in a lot of scenarios and could get you in awkward situations.
Good for her for coming out though.
