But with straight guys I gotta tone it down and keep it cool, like "Sup. Cool. Yea. OK."

If I don't like the person, yes.
If I do, I'll always try to respond with a question/something interesting unless the conversation is obviously dying.

I barely start conversations with anyone. Only if I like have a crush on them or if I need something.
I'm more of a type to say that if someone wants to talk to me, then they'd have to begin a conversation.
I'm good with grammar and I'm good with holding a conversation, though. But, if I notice someone can't hold a conversation I'll just give up and stop replying.

Depends on the person and the level of urgency.
For example, I never text back my mother because her texts don't even look like the English language, so I just either call her or wait for her to call me if it's really that important.

I could take hours or even days to text someone back unless it's someone I'm thirsty for.
