Artists do that all the time so they can release a second single before the album's release.

Ray J owns the song, but if the album drops by the end of 2008 I doubt the single will come out 5-6 months before it...and if the theory of releasing a 2nd single before the album, it still makes no sense considering the 2nd single can just be released when the whole album goes to iTunes.
