Complaints about the Oscars' gender disparities are in no short supply, even from the nominees themselves. But "Before Midnight" co-star Julie Delpy, who's a Best Original Screenplay contender for penning the movie's script with Ethan Hawke and director Richard Linklater, thinks the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' rich, white, male-dominated voting body is so far gone that she doesn't even care.

Delpy also bemoaned what she sees as the declining state of independent cinema, which she attributes to Hollywood heavyweights like Harvey Weinstein. "I think they love cinema, but they also like to take a movie and give it an added value, then kill everything left behind," she said. "This has a lot to do with the Oscars. In the '90s, there were real independent movies, but they have slowly been crushed by the majors. The minute they take over something, they crush it. ... Every time I've become a part of the Hollywood mainstream, it's been crap! Let's be honest: 90 percent of movies made in Hollywood are crap."

I kind of agree with her. Most of the movies are crap.

She's sounds bitter. There are plenty of great movies being made today. And plenty of them are independent.

"Independent" films today are far gone from the truly independent films of the past. Any independently financed films have to be backed by a major studio today to be noticed at all, and that simply won't happen without sucking up to the conventions of Hollywood.

Being the only one with the audacity to voice the obvious truth doesn't make you bitter.

But she campaigned a lot though. The hypocrisy.

She campaigned how?

She showed up to several press conferences and I believe she also showed up to THR's (or it was another big magazines) showcase and gave interviews. I don't personally think marginal campaigning is wrong just that you kind of have to do it to get any kind of recognition.

And it doesn't make the bs being spewed fact either. Both sides can find arguments in the situation.

Just because an independent film has to be backed to get more recognition, doesn't make it any less independent.

Honey those are conventional promo events that you are contractually obligated to do. She hasn't done a tenth of what Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Winslet did to secure their trophies. Now that was actual campaigning.

No I am just saying that those are still considered campaigning. Lawrence actually did barely any campaigning this year (unlike last year ). Michael Fassbender is an example of someone else who also did hardly any. He didn't even do the interviews or show up to award shows.

Now Winslet and Melissa Leo though..

Oh it absolutely does. The whole point of independent cinema is to break away from the Hollywood convention so the truly creative and courageous filmmaking could stand a chance to share some spotlight, or to be made at all. There's nothing creative and courageous about the typical Weinstein-backed crowd-pleasers, and yet they have taken all the limited resources for the independent cinema. The old farts in the Academy have only made it worse.

Melissa Leo didn't campaign much either. She wanted to, but the studio gave all the resources to Amy Adams, so she had to take it all in her own hands.

No it really doesn't. Only people who pick and choose find a problem with it. I have no problem with a filmmaker making a film independently and then having it bought and picked up by a distributor to help get their art out to the masses, and possibly get them awarded for their work. Some people want to take that route and it doesn't make them any less independent in my eyes, nor does it change the fact that the film was made independently. They are just smarter and know how to play the game.

She is right about the current nature of film now. A lot of movies now are just straight up b.s.

And not her saying presents get you in their pockets! So angry.

Like the Independent Spirit Awards for instance.

I agree with this. I actually enjoyed seeing independent films by little known actors and directors.
Things have taken a turn for the worst as far as indie films goes.
