It totally was, it was about really dark themes and love relationships which aren't in any other YGO series. Besides the bad people here were ones that had died in very unfair ways, like when we see the one that controls the Whale is killed by the Leader of the Dead by hanging him to death.
Then when Misty commits suicide because his little brother was killed in lab experiments.
A lot of things on 5D's were really amazing, that's why I loved it.
