However, I think it gets tricky beyond the actual genital surgery. The line between cosmetic and medical surgery is blurred and subjective. Does it just include breast implants/reduction? Does it include facial surgery to 'pass' more convincingly?

Maybe the solution is that everyone gets the same grant for the minimum service, and beyond is at the patients discretion? Kind of like NHS dentists where they'll fix your teeth with fillings etc. but they won't pay for white enamel fillings over metal on certain teeth because it's cosmetic.

Yeah, I agree with this. I'm not saying they should have loads of free cosmetic surgeries and be turned into some sort of supermodel, but I think at the most basic level they should be allowed gender-realignment surgery. I feel as if it is a human right.

I do think it's a medical condition - In the US I think your health insurance provider should pay at least a sizable portion and you should be left to figure out the rest like a deductible or something.

Some of these posters are the worst.

Gender dysphoria is much more severe than someone with a big nose. (Being born ugly is not a true equivalency to transsexuality).

If anything needs to be paid for, it's stuff like this. The government is not responsible for every mentally impaired person. Whether someone wants to be a chick or not is up to them. Important issues like this are of such that should be paid for

Calling a gender reassignment surgery "cosmetic?

I suggest you look up gender dysmorphia. It's a legitimate condition that can lead to depression and even suicide for transgenders (note: genders implies someone who hasn't changed as opposed to an actual transsexual).

the fact is, none of us chose to be born with our current genders. That's just how life worked out. It's fine if you want to make the switch, but that's not something that should be funded over, say, building roads or education.

Yet it is also a human right to live, but my surgery that kept me alive was paid for by my parents, not the government. Your argument makes no sense.

I believe the government should have paid for your surgery too, but that's a totally separate issue. I'm strictly asking about transsexual people here.

In general, yes. But in this case, no it's not. People who feel like they're trapped in the wrong body will continue to live. If they want to finally deal with the issue, it's on their own terms, not the government's. Medical issues of life and death should be treated first if anything, not cosmetic surgery
