But yeah, I know what you mean. I think Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc. people get discriminated against not just in the music industry, but in the film industry and many others as well. Especially the males, since they're very rarely seen or portrayed as masculine.
Even the big hits I can think of, aside from FEM which used non-Asian artists as collaborators to make their songs more palatable, have issues: Gangnam Style uses stereotypes up the wazoo which appeals to Westerners.
(An article: http://www.japantimes.co.jp/culture/.../#.Uw5C8vBX-uY)
And Sukiyaki from over 50 years ago had an American title that had absolutely nothing to do with the song, cuz the title made it sound more Ethnic. As Wiki says: "A Newsweek Magazine columnist noted that the re-titling was like issuing "Moon River" in Japan under the title "Beef Stew."
I'll show when I get home and look up. It could've happened 2007-2009 too. There has also been times when black artists had the entire Top 10.

2. I Wanna Love You - Akon
3. Smack That - Eminem feat. Akon
4. Fergalicious - Fergie feat. wil.I.am
5. My Love - Justin Timberlake feat. T.I.
In 2006, 2007 and 2008 black artists had 4 spots in the top 5 several times.
I believe that the last time that this happened was between 2002-2005 when there was a big wave of urban sound.
Thats kinda of whats happening again 2013-16 will be hella hip hop influcenced in music. Urban music is a trend. perfect time for any black artist to come and dominate hip hop .
This may be splitting hairs, but Jay Sean is South Asian (Punjabi).
So his "look" isn't the kind that could make people be like, "Oh, ew, an Asian." In typical parlance, people when they talk about "those Asian people" mean East Asians.
That depends on what part of the world you're in. In the UK, "Asian" would refer to South Asians and they were plenty of members right here actually do have that "Oh, ew an Asian" reaction to people like Zayn Malik.
And for the record, South Asians artists charting on the Hot 100 is probably even worse than other Asians. Freddie Mercury doesn't count since everyone think he's white.

That applies to South Asians portrayals in Hollywood too. Asian males in general are portrayed as pathetic, anti-social, geek types.
I suppose my viewpoint is an American-centric one (though we are talking about the US Hot 100), and one skewed by the gay-heavy Internet forums I go on [as my IRL friends don't give a crap about pop music].
Since mostly the comments I've heard about Zayn are along the lines of "He can get it," "My body is ready," "Feeling the thirst," etc. I certainly haven't heard those comments about, say, Psy.

I don't think a chubby, stocky-faced, middle-aged man would ever be considered attractive, but I understand what you're trying to say. I'm sure if SE7EN's US debut back in 2009 actually had mainstream exposure, he would be getting some of those nasty comments about his looks. Also, when an East Asian (and other minorities too) is undeniably good-looking, their ethnic background is often questioned.
By the way, this thread is the most recent example of the Zayn thing I was talking about. That member is completed shocked that he has a huge lead over the others and goes onto say he does not find Asians attractive. This Jay Sean thread is similar.

I'm old; Psy is way sexier than Zayn to me, probably because he's more intelligent/educated. That and I've always gone for shortish baby-faced baritones.
