What do you think of Brooklyn's / other small neighborhoods gentrification?

But that is America. It's a melting pot: everyone living together wherever they want. Not to mention that no culture stays the same and trying to maintain culture usually just pushes people away from it. And then there's the hypocrisy of a millionaire having his offices in places he criticizes for being gentrified.

Ya, change can suck. But are we really about to say that you can't live in certain areas if you have a certain income or a certain look? That can't lead to good things.

This isn't new. I have friends in Red Hook, and the hipsters have taken over. It has its upsides and downsides.

These people have no respect for culture because they have none. Its like Miley Cyrus with her whole act, really sad.

How do they have no respect for culture exactly? Miley is trying to get attention. Hipsters are simply living where they want to, and most notably in places with cheaper rent.

Well it's sad that the culture is being lost , but that was bound to happen over time.

The Brooklyn hipsters can be an annoying bunch though.

I don't think the culture will be lost if everyone acts inclusively and accepts new people into the community. But people are so defensive so they automatically put up an "Us vs. You" guard up which never ends well.

He didn't lie about the improvement with neighborhoods when whites start moving back into them.
I can name a few areas around here that the city didn't care until a certain type of people wanted to live in certain areas. Next thing you know things improve greatly.

That's not exactly their fault but falls on the city.

He's not lying. The rent prices in NYC are climbing every year and rich white people are invading like roaches.

Because they're just living there because its the new 'it' spot. House prices go up. This a community and has been home to generations.The hipsters will move out in a few years when Brooklyn is played out but those people will have lost their homes forever.

You have a good point but you can't really prevent a certain type of person from living somewhere. As usual, the poor have the most to lose, but it's not up to the hipsters to not rent out an apartment just because there already is a culture there. NYC should be helping it's citizens instead of just going for as high property taxes as possible.

True. I'm not saying this whole thing isn't unfortunate, but in America you have the freedom to choose where you live and discrimination is still discrimination.

There really needs to be more governmental input rather than just hating on groups for moving where they want and have the rights to live. This seems very similar to the way that Native Americans were treated. We should learn from those mistakes.

I agree what he said about Bushwick being renamed to East Williamsburg. Many people were having a fit about it.

Good, they're awful people.

Thats obviously not going to happen because the government cares more about money than they do about those people keeping their homes. How about instead of doing all that the hipsters find another cool place to live where poor people don't end up suffering.
