The 4S was not uneventful. People were VERY happy with it... that's why it's one of the best selling iPhones. Siri was a feature that lots of people were excited about at the time, even though it ended up pretty useless. It also had major speed improvements over the 4.

Main reason I got it over the 4 at the time. Also I wanted a 32GB one

It was the first time apple disappointed in terms of design and because up until that point we where used to new things from APPLE. I remember reading the meltdowns on engadget and other tech bloggers criticizing the lack of change. Siri was a game changer though.
