Madonna was always threatened by Janet and it goes back before she tried associating herself with MJ for press. She was never 'classy' about it. The host of the VMAs in the late 80s said this:
"I was in my dressing room and Madonna's was next to mine and Janet's was next to hers. Well Madonna's dressing room door was cracked open and I could hear her talking about Janet -not in a positive way...and actually one of Janet's people heard as well."
She's shaded nearly everyone from Janet to Mariah, Whitney, Cher, Britney a few times, so please don't even try to say she was unbothered
And when Janet made the 'classy' comment, it was in retaliation to Madonna talking smack about her behind the scenes for years. Let's not conveniently forget that at the time, Madonna was releasing a sex book. Of course she was classy compared to that, even when she used sexual themes she was never over the top with it
