This is a question I have always wondered about people's opinion on. What do you think of arists who use auto tune? Is it good? Is it bad? Is it different for for different artists? Discuss sistrens.

Depends on HOW they use it.
If they use it 'cause they can't sing and are trying to, then

If they're using it for an artistic effect (IE: 808s & Hearbreak) then

If they're using it 'cause they CAN sing but like the sound, then

Depends on how they use it. For example: it was clever when Gaga used it on Heavy Metal Lover + Monster

As long as they sound good, it's okay. I mean, "Femme Fatale" is one of the most autotuned albums ever but I think Britney sounds amazing on it, and it's my favorite album of all time.
Sure, if they can't serve good vocals live, then it all goes against them

Auto tune to sound like a robot? Or auto tune to fix minor things?

I find the robotic sounding stuff annoying but I don't care about other auto tune.

I love TFM and all but Gaga uses autotune a LOT on it, not a bad thing, just saying she does... "Speechless" and "Monster" are prime examples

It depends on how they use it like others have stated. I don't mind if artists use it for effect, like Lady Gaga did with her song "Starstruck". On the other hand, I do mind when artists use it to correct their imperfections. It makes me think that they're incompetent and shouldn't even be singing.

I really don't get why it should matter. As long as it makes the end product sound as good as it can be, it really doesn't matter to me.

Depends. Sometimes actual good singers use it for the effect. 808s (the whole album) and Speechless/Starstruck etc. come to mind. Also, I don't really know how AutoTune works, but if it lets you fix one bad note easily, I could understand why you might use it. Maybe you're in the studio and you've done a take that is incredible except for one bit, and you wanna fix that and keep the rest

But if you're using it to hide that you're just not that talented...

When I use Melodyne, I use it to fix timing and slightly off vocals in a natural sense.

Auto-tune you can't really get as in-depth as you can with Melodyne, so the results are always much more uniform and drastic, which is what this thread is talking about.

Like, you wouldn't use auto-tune to fix a few errors, you'd use Melodyne for that, which isn't what this thread's about Good that someone on this site knows what Melodyne is other than me though

If the artist has proved themselves without autotune and are using it for artistic effect then I don't mind it.

Well, generally in the studio they record multiple takes of a song and then stitch together the best parts of each, syllable by syllable. It's called "comping." So I doubt that's the reason anyone uses it.

But yeah, many artists use it as a crutch, but others use it as a tool, often to sound brash, silly, robotic, or to otherwise experiment with their voices. It really doesn't matter to me much, but I hate how many people categorically dismiss all use of AutoTune when it has some genuinely artful uses.
