Well, if you break it down to the 'closest competitor:'
Beyoncé v. Britney - He he ha ha
Katy v. Gaga - Again, he he ha ha
Lorde v. Miley - Miley had two number ones, Lorde has two Grammys - and a near platinum album.
You'd have to be completely delusional to say otherwise.
I'm only support one of those artists but I can't deny the vast amount of success all three received. Well deserved two because they obviously put a lot into their recent work. It's kinda interesting to see how all three of them are from different generations of music but were still able to dominate in similar manners.

So, in COMPARISON, all three kind of did.
Well, I personally believe they did not. One of them for example failed to have any noticeable cultural impact, which is an important factor to take into consideration when analyzing popular culture like this thread is attempting to do.

Are you talking about Lorde or Katy?
But do I even need to ask...
ps. out of these three the one with the least impact is Lorde.
Yeah, I think so too. But Miley isn't too far behind if we think of it beyond that of a sales/certification level. She was on the media's minds completely for months on end, and compared to her 2010 musical era, the Bangerz era was very successful. "Adore You" seems to be shaping up to be a hit as well, so it wasn't just a flash in the pan.
What about Miley Cyrus? I don't have receipts for her but she seemed to dominating too.
Perhaps the four of them? Or I'd prolly scratch off Lorde from that list and include Miley.
Again, they both had a HUGE number one hit (although 9 weeks > 3 weeks), but Lorde's the one selling them ALBUMS and getting them GRAMMYS. So, arguably, she's in the lead. (For now.)
