A majority of people probably can not even name one other person in the draft, he is the only person people will be talking about, picking him up will create big buzz for whatever team takes him. The NFL is not going to allow him to be passed on because it only reflects badly on them and will make them appear homophobic.

It actually does hurt him
because of the attention. A team might not want all of the added scrutiny of how he's adjusting to the team, if other players are accepting him, etc. It could also turn off homophobic football fans, which there is unfortunately an abundance of. It would be safer for a team, especially one that's a bit rocky in terms of success, to not pick him just because of all the added attention that could backfire on them.
