I think the more important issue here is being able to apologise sincerely when you have accidentally offended someone, rather than make excuses or invalidate their feelings.

Well said. We probably are more sensitive than ever, which isn't all bad. The sensitivity to certain topics has made us all more aware. Five to 10 years ago the general public would have responded to pictures like the Bruce Jenner alleged transitioning with comments like "freak". That's not happening as much now. We're more aware and sensitive. We'll find the balance between sensitive and too sensitive in time.
