I'm guessing it's because The BRITs is just an incredibly self-aggrandising ceremony about celebrating British culture and giving them awards they couldn't win at the Grammys, but international acts bring in more viewers.
I wouldn't be so against the whole segregation if there were a lot of international awards, but as it stands now any given non-UK act is only eligible for one award. No album, song or breakthrough awards. Ridiculous.
