Something happened in the 50s and the way Democrats and Republicans viewed social issues changed dramatically.
It's mainly due to, at the moment, Republicans making up more of white old men than the Democrats. Before the 50s, the reverse was true.
The only realistic issue I have with Republican politics is them wanting to end abortion and gay marriage - which would be big government actions. Doesn't make sense.
But as the old die out, I think the Republicans will see a big shift. The conservative social values are the only main thing holding them back ATM IMO.
