Back when slavery was abolished, the Republicans were more progressive than the Democrats, yet today- and at this point since many decades ago- the tables have turned and the Democrats are the more forward-thinking. Today, the Republicans are stuck in a regressive-ass limbo.

I personally don't like them because they tend to be very old fashioned when it comes to their views on women and women's rights and obviously as a woman I have a problem with that. Not liking gays or minorities doesn't help any either.

ATRL doesn't use the Republican party because we like to imagine a future where we're married to some creep with a six pack we met on grindr. This definitely isn't the place to ask for serious political opinions.

While I agree in parts, still, ATRL is more intelligent than what some think. And whoever a gay guy wants to marry, it's totally up to him. It's not like straight marriages are outright successful these days (taking into account the almost 50% divorce rate).

Something happened in the 50s and the way Democrats and Republicans viewed social issues changed dramatically.

It's mainly due to, at the moment, Republicans making up more of white old men than the Democrats. Before the 50s, the reverse was true.

The only realistic issue I have with Republican politics is them wanting to end abortion and gay marriage - which would be big government actions. Doesn't make sense.

But as the old die out, I think the Republicans will see a big shift. The conservative social values are the only main thing holding them back ATM IMO.

I'm a registered independent who's voted Democrat and Republican. In fact, I voted for Gov. Christie both times. I'm of a center-left ideology when it comes to social issues and center-right for fiscal. Unfortunately there aren't many Republicans that warrant my vote, especially when they'd rather engage in stupid ideological fights than do what they were elected to do and govern.

The point is this is a toxic bait thread on a website dedicated to pop music. There's hundreds of forums that would offer better discussion if the op was looking for it. That's not to knock ATRL— I wouldn't go to freerepublic and start a thread asking if Lady Gaga will have longevity. By and large, the people here (myself included) don't care much for politics but we're passionate about gay marriage. That's why we don't identify as republicans and this thread is speeding down the road to becoming a mess.
