I don't know much about our involvement but I do know that defending our allies is a necessity. So of course we have to defend Japan.

But the point is that if something ever happened to the US, Japan would be ready support us. When countries declare these things for each other, they have to mutually follow through

Indeed. If the US fails to do this, the allies will question America's loyalty. As a result, it will be much easier for the allies to become enemies.

Example:
"Russia could say: "Hey, Japan, America let you down. We wouldn't do that, join us "
Japan: "Okay,"
