I actually assumed this myself.
It seems as so most 3rd world countries revolve around the tropic of cancer/equator, whereas the well developed first world countries are in the cooler climates in the northern hemisphere. Though there's plenty of exceptions on both sides, it's interesting to think about.
I tend to believe the year long heat either makes people lazy, or prevents people from further educating themselves (throughout history). For example, the industrial revolution was partly due to people urbanizing their communities to prevent one another from freezing to death, among many other reasons whereas the hotter climates relied heavily on slaves throughout history.
The depression part of it applies to places with extreme conditions of cold weather imo. IE Alaska, Russia, etc..
