Not exactly. Madonna had consistently great all round success whereas Katy's was mediocre, and when Cyndi flopped she bombed. When Gaga flops she still debuts #1 worldwide.

Let's be honest here, the whole Gaga phenomenon had a expiring date. The gimmicks Gaga used did discarded any chances of long term popularity with GP as people got eventually tired of her crazy outfits and performances and her trying to out weird herself and also her personality is quite off-putting too. Even though, I do not like Katy's music (on the most part), but the girl has the personality which draws people in this in turn sustain her popularity and help it grow too. May I add, she is pretty hot too which helps.

Is this a joke? You're comparing a dark 3rd single from an already successful release (which sold around the same as TD despite being an 8 track ep with 3 singles) to a generic summery lead single. Bad Romance slayed California Girls, especially globally (BR was #1 European year end the year CG was released, while CG was number 14), and both Alejandro and BR are more remembered.

Gaga's peak era was huge and ended with You and I. Katy's bigger now but Gaga's hardly trying to beat her at all; and even when Katy's bigger she's still nowhere near the biggest.

Probably not YET, and I stan for Katy. It's too soon to tell. They're both still relatively new. Give it another few years, and then we'll know for sure.

Katy is obviously more commercially popular than Gaga but she is still such an awful performer and doesn't have the talent to be taken seriously as an artist. Gaga was close to it but then she became so pretentious that she also became a joke. But she's still significantly more talented as an artist and a performer than Katy, and in the long run, she'll be able to bounce back from this sharp decline.

Gaga just needs to quit social media. She is consumed by the charts and by public perceptions and it's time for her to just get off Twitter and Littlemonsters.com and start focusing on making interesting music. Artpop was so generic and boring that she didn't manage to live up to the hype that she created herself. She's responsible for her own decline. She needs to just make music and videos and then shut the eff up. That's how she'll be successful again. Less talk, more work. Let the craft speak for itself.

Paula Abdul had a bunch of #1s and look how it turned out. Katy is playing it safe just like Paula did while Gaga is taking risks just like Madonna did.

Gaga was hot for about 2 years. She was already showing signs of slowing down by mid-2010. Sure, her tour grosses are impressive and she sold a lot of records between 2008 and 2011, but Katy is far more accepted on a wider scale. She's fodder for the public, while Gaga continues to seclude herself with each release. It's no surprise that Katy eclipsed her.
