Also, NSYNC was the definition of local. Zero impact and success outside of North America.

I don't consider The Beatles a boy band. To me, a boy band is one that does not play instruments. It's a group of guys who are all vocalists.

One Direction are just X-Factor rejects (at least in the solo rounds) that got stuck together and got lucky by being given some hit songs.

Had album sales not taken a huge nose dive since 2000, then 1D could easily have had a shot at becoming bigger than BSB and NSYNC. As huge as BSB and NSYNC were, they would have been much bigger without each other. 1D don't have another boy band at their level, and the only teen idol comparable to them in popularity would be Bieber. And, unlike NSYNC/BSB who never overshadowed one another, 1D quickly dethroned Bieber and took the teen demo to themselves.

There are other boybands?

In total record sales, they'll eventually reach NSYNC, which is quite a feat. BSB is out of reach though.

In 1D's defense, most other boybands have open auditions to form their groups like Westlife The Wanted and Nsync in a way
