It's not just a "trendy new thing to hate on Russia" due to the "new law". It's been going on for a long time.
And it's also not "normal levels of homophobia" compared to other countries - unless you're comparing with places like Saudi Arabia.

Everybody is told something by their media, you just choose to believe it or not. You don't know things from the inside, you're told that "the situation in Russia" is "way worse than in other countries". I mean, how do you know those links on newspapers on the Wikipedia page are fully accurate? "80% of population are Orthodox"... please.
Of course, I've also heard about these single surveys saying "the majority of the population is against same-sex marriages". How to say... Milonov always says, pushing his stupid initiatives, that "according to surveys, the majority... agrees with him". Still, wherever I'd go, everyone thinks he's a clown who dishonours the image of the whole government, and wishes he and some his supporters would finally be retired.
(Taking this away, I can even accept these results of the surveys, because the topic of same-sex marriages was opened not so long ago, and many people didn't care about this before, besides... you know, everything depends on sample. Take the sample of 100 grannys to prove "the population is homophobic", and it will be proven).

You genuinely think Russian government supports terrorists, that says much already, but anyways.
Tesak and some activists supporting him - the whole thing is disgusting, everybody would agree with that. I guess, they are radicals - you know, what I mean? A bunch of evil, close-minded, dumb young people who need to oppress anyone. They thought the controversial law can be interpreted like carte-blanche for commiting crime in address to minorities. If there were not gays, there would be Uzbeks, Tajiks and other national minorities (as there were so criminals in 2006). That's awful, that must be put down, but I think these people basically have much less to do with homophobia itself than they are often believed to be. They are criminals for crime, not for idea.

Don't be in a hurry to jump into far conclusions about your opponent's personality
I was fully supportive to LGBT from the very beginning, and I still support them. I do think the law is ridiculous and it should be abolished (although the aim seemed to be not-so-bad, as I said, but the reasoning and realization are). People with whom I usually communicate have also been saying the same. Now even such people are like "when it's gonna end"? Problems should be solved, of course, whether there is international attention on these problems (with all consequences) or not. But injustices should not be treaten selectively. I just told that now the whole thing starts to seem more and more like a tasty topic for Western media, not in the sake of charity and tolerance but in the sake of... "look, they are bad, look at them and look at you, see that you're good and value it!" Nobody wants to be bashed for what they are not for a long time.
Madonna has always been supportive to LGBT - whether it was under huge attention or not. So I think she's genuine and I accept her project. Besides, she's telling about raising tolerance all around the world. I doubt that all these newspapers do.

then support the movment, and help taking down this law! Russia will be bashed until this STUPID law will be abolished. And fairly imo. All those things about the propaganda is OUT of this world. Totally. And the argument of the children it's really stupid, it's not like LGBT people go to kindergarten explaing omosexuality. And anyway it's not like teaching children about diversity is something bad, or could change their sexuality. Only blind people could think that.

Then again, it's just our government with some religious fanatics who are against LGBT. Actually, I've never seen gays being beated or anything else.

I have every right to be disappointed in Katy for collaborating with such a person. Are ATRL moderators promoting racism now? Should we, as a pop community, support this kind of behavior?

Maybe the creator of this law thinks so (I said, nearly everybody wants him to retire, but he's just a troll who points the public's attention on him). Or maybe, they think that the fact of informing people can be equaled to so-called "propaganda". They just need to study biology a bit. But, I guess, some other politicians are not informed better in this case, so they could be convinced at first by far-fetched arguments, and afterwards... that's a pity, but I don't think after all these international protests the law will be abolished. Now the principles work more, as it usually happens. Like "if we're a strong, principial force, we're going to act like we can't be convinced, unless everyone would think we're weak-willed". That's dumb, I know... but that happens. If people actively protest something, their rallies are dispersed, and only after that the government might think of finding a compromise. The problem here is that many Russians think they can do nothing to change things. Call that pessimism, or even some kind of fatalism or so...
