NO.
Someone PLEASE give me a rational explanation for why they enjoy this song. The vocals? Sure, okay, fine.
But the lyrics?!?!?! Are you seeing this as a love song or as a "Little Monsters ode"? At least tell me it's the former. I guess I can see this being a crappy love song with cheesy lyrics.
But omggg when I first heard this performed after yet another babbling speech from her about her fans… I never thought I could cringe so much. "#wewannabewithyou" trending just about sealed the deal.
It's cool if Lady Gaga is a bit of a narcissist. She's a pop star; they're allowed that kind of stuff when they're outputting good material. But seeing all of the fan outpouring at how touched they were to be serenaded like that... Eek, get a grip. (Likewise, I was very relived to see "Gypsy" work as more of a love song in the album version than as yet another bit of fan service.)
I remain SO happy that someone—maybe it was Gaga herself, maybe not—made her take this track back to the drawing board. It might have been the most controversial, love-it-or-hate-it track in all the ARTPOP reviews (obviously I love it, and find it 10000x more interesting as a song about addiction and love than as about... LM and love??), but anyone who thinks "I Wanna Be with You" wouldn't have plummeted her Metacritic score all the more is being a bit delusional, IMO. Definitely her worst ballad ever, including all of her unreleased material.
Since I'm already rambling here (yes, I'm pressed—this song gets me pressTTTT), I won't get into a blow-by-blow discussion of the lyrics. Instead, I gladly invite anyone to actually walk me through the song with an explanation as to why they like what she's saying. As I am legitimately baffled, so also am I legitimately curious why everyone enjoys it so much.
(Again, though, you don't need to tell me about the vocals or the overall serene feel of the track. I can see how those are appealing; I just can't see how they make up for the message.)
