When Someone Famous Dies...
When someone who is famous dies, I tend to notice that suddenly everyone cares about this person. There will be people on Twitter like:
Quote:
Omg, I can't actually believe *insert person here* is dead. I loved them a lot.
|
Quote:
I was *insert misspelled name here*'s biggest fan. I owned *misspelled books/albums/movies/etc.*, and it meant a lot to me.
|
Quote:
*insert person* IS DEAD?!?! I AM GOING TO GO ON A MARATHON OF *insert their most popular books/albums/movies/etc.* AND CRY MYSELF TO SLEEP TONIGHT.
|
(In reality, they probably own, at most, 1 song downloaded off iTunes that they bought after they died, a book they got from a garage sale for 50 cents, or an old ass movie their parents bought back when they were still in diapers.)
Quote:
Rest in peace, * insert misspelled name here*. *Insert pun about their most famous work*
|
Quote:
Retweet to show *insert name here* respect! Let's show *insert name here/character name from their most famous show/movie here* how much they meant to us!
|
Let me not even get started on other social media, because they aren't bound to 140 characters.
Now, I know with every celebrity death, there will be people who legit cared before they died, and who are actually devastated they died, but a lot of people simply say these things to fit in. Are you guilty of this? Do you say R.I.P. just for showing respect to the dead? Do you just go on with your normal life? Let's discuss this issue.

I don't get why when some famous recording artist dies their sales have a boost
I mean if you like their music why wait until they die to buy it

I'll usually say something like "_______ died? Wow, that's crazy." and move on.

I am not guilty of that. If I'm not familiar with a famous person that dies, I'm not going to act like I am familiar with them or their work.

Maybe there are people who only get aware of their material, I mean, notice, after they resolved to figure out about it when found out of his/her death... I don't know..

I'm not guilty of that, but just because someone didn't stan/dedicate their life to that celebrity it doesn't mean they didn't care for them to begin with. I actually hate the topic of death, celebrity or not, and don't typically comment on it. I've only been truly devastated by one celebrities death. I was his biggest fan, but I never acknowledged his passing on Twitter or any social networks. I don't know- it's hard for me.

While I do know there are people who would care, a lot of it just seems like they are saying R.I.P. just because it's "proper" in our society to do so. Also, it may make people seem less ignorant if they acknowledge a famous person's death and act like they care.
Idk, but I highly doubt everyone who acts devastated really cares all that much.

I think it's just one of those "you never know what you have till it's gone" type things.

Not just when famous people dies. People just become fake when people die in general.

It's difficult to say because so many people are different. There are, without a doubt, people who will overact and make it seem like they care more than they actually do. That's a given. However, I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who just have a general appreciation for the art of acting/singing and every death comes as shock, especially when they are young ie. Paul Walker, Cory Monteith
There's just a lot of dividers in social media that breaks different types of people up and those people all react differently to these types of situations. I know what kind you're referring to though, and they are annoying.

I pay my respects as is appropriate, but I don't pretend to have been all that much of a huge fan if I wasn't, because that's dishonest.

Yeah, I don't understand some people. And a lot of the ones who do this bashed them when they were alive.

I agree with the OP, this is even a reach, since most people have never even payed for a song before.

This too.
I honestly feel bad by even feeling like this, but I've seen so many times on Facebook after someone in my city has died.. being praised for what a great person they were and what a difference in the world they made and how only the good die young, and I just think "Really? This person was killed for a drug/money/gang related reason, and here I am having never done anything bad, but I'm not seen as being as good because I haven't died?" IDK it just annoys me I guess.

This is what I'm talking about. Just because someone didn't dedicate their life to follow this celebrity, or pay tons of money for their products it doesn't mean they don't care. Some of you need to remember that not everyone is as obsessed with pop culture as us. A lot of people are just casual fans and seeing any sort of public figure die could be a surprise and upsetting to them. Not everyone feels the need to dedicate themselves to one artist/actor, people can be fans of MANY celebrities and care for them all. You can't be mad at them for that, and you shouldn't call them annoying for caring.

People handle death differently just in general. Even if my fave passes away I'd probably won't say much of anything, just like with family or friends, in real life I mourn in silence.
Some people are extra and fake about it to try to fit in and for some it's like what RaeseanLohan stated. Playing movies/videos/music etc. is sort of their way to get through grief too.
