Nintendo: "We did not do enough to attract children"
Quote:
"Our approach to targeting children has been inadequate"

Iwata-san also mentioned that one of the problems of the current generation is that the company wasn’t successful enough in attracting the youngest areas of its target customer base:

An alternative translation with the same meaning but different paraphrase reads “Our approach to targeting children has been inadequate” (thanks Shouta from NeoGAF). The meaning was also confirmed by Zefah, that posted the following: Had it right in the meaning that “We did not do enough to attract children” and not ”our strategy of appealing to children was not enough.”
nnnn welcome back from your short vacation, I expected nothing less of you.
In the end I think their customer base is not just children, but families overall (at least with the Wii). The reason Wii U flopped is just because it wasn't exciting or different enough for the average family to want/need
I'm starting to doubt Nintendo in hopes of that they'll recover from crap. Have they ever been in such a situation like this? I know the GCN sold only around 20 million consoles but I don't remember Nintendo receiving a lot of "DOOM" press like the Wii U is giving them.
The whole statement doesn't make sense with the other things they said at the financial briefing so you know that translation in the OP is BS. Iwata specifically made a point to say they want to target more audiences besides kids.
