Some of these posts are reaching for the sky with T-Rex arms.
There is nothing wrong with this. I support Disney and their decision.

And if parents are homophobic themselves, then kids wouldn't be allowed to watch the show anyways, and so the entire concept of the episode was moot because they won't be exposed to it regardless. Feel me?
We need to educate the parents through adult-targeted shows, so that they can see what's wrong with their thought process, and even if they don't accept it, hopefully the kids will catch wind of it when they grow older and actually understand what it means to be gay.
My entire point is that, yes, kids need to be exposed to homosexuality and be taught that it's okay, but there was no point in doing it on a kids show. It makes for FIGHTING which is the OPPOSITE of what they gay community needs. Running gay-friendly ads on Disney would have been a MUCH better alternative, so it's less of an imposition to the parents.

whatever
Disney already decided on this and i'm sure there are a lot of child psychologists who agree this won't affect children in any negative way

I'm sure it won't.
Doesn't change the fact that this is bringing unnecessary controversy and it would be better expressed though gay-friendly commercials.

Kids should not be involved politically in any way at all. Period, blank. And by Civil Rights, I obviously mean those of the races and gay rights of homosexuals. Let's not act completely ignorant now.

Acting like the two are separate is the ignorant comment.

Then next time I'll be more specific.
They're obviously the same issue, but gay rights was the main topic here so I separated it from the generalized "rights" category because it's the more prominent issue in the media.

So you'd rather Disney have a gay PSA airing during commercial breaks than just showing a lesbian couple for 30 seconds in a show?

No matter what happens, people are going to fight about this topic. If we don't fight, nothing will change. It's sad, but true. Should we just keep silent and let parents run all over us and tell us we shouldn't be near children because of our sexuality?

They can show a lesbian couple in the Friends for Change thing whatever so it would at least seem like they're not doing this for the controversy and ratings.
And also, those homophobic parents wouldn't get the chance to change the channel because they wouldn't know it was coming.

weren't you arguing that "political views" shouldn't be imposed on children?
so you think that gay friendly commercials airing between shows would be less in your face than a gay couple cameo on a show that averages 2.5 million viewers?

Kids are too young to be pushed into things like this. There were better ways of handling it, but instead Disney is choosing to impose and influence little kids' minds, rather than let them think for themselves. The topic is incredibly mature and for children to be exposed to it after seeing the conventional family structure would most likely make them feel uncomfortable, and end up backfiring.
|
This is the EXACT reason why some of those "little kids" commit suicide when they grow up cuz they find out that they are "different" than what they've been told is "normal".

The assumption is that the children are somehow worse for it. When in fact, it's only a controversy to adults who have a problem with gay couples/parents. It would BE an issue if sex was somehow involved or a political message was being sent through this episode about marriage or something more significant.
I just don't see the problem here when children should be allowed to be exposed to the idea of non-conventional families and gay people (when it's appropriate; like GLC was).

They're not really doing it for controversy though. If you see the episode/clip in context the fact that they're lesbians has very little emphasis. If anything they're normalizing it which is in turn beneficial to society.
This show is so good though!

You've just been repeating yourself the entire thread. This is THE most passive way of introducing gay families as an acceptable scenario to a mom/dad. They don't make a big deal that they are two women; they just keep it moving, AS IT SHOULD BE. It shouldn't be a big deal that families are no longer "traditional". There's nothing wrong with this.
I will admit, I understand where you're coming from, however, that the parent need to be educated first for this to be effective. However, that isn't how acquiring rights work. It has to be a full-fledged push. Fight is necessary

There is nothing wrong with a TV show character happening to have two moms. Did you all forget that there's real life kids who have two moms? Like, what do we say to those kids' friends and all? "Oh, sorry, you're to young to be exposed to 'mature' issues so you can't be friends with her." Um, yeah. If what I'm saying sounds ridiculous, that's because it is. It's not as though the show is literally shoving in the viewers' faces "OH HEY LOOK KIDS TWO MOMS YOU SHOULD ALL LOVE THIS!" There's just two moms for this other girl. That's it. And that's a good thing - exposure that makes it look normal and doesn't shove it in your face is a great thing. And it does not force kids to accept it at all. In any way. I literally cannot process the problems you might have with this.

I'm saying that Disney should not have hyped this so much, because it looks more like exploitation of controversial topics, rather than a testament to the prominent issue of gay-rights.
Like I said, they could have ran a commercial where a lesbian couple is featured, much like this episode, and so much controversy would have been avoided. But Disney isn't stupid, and they know if they did that they wouldn't get the ratings they are with this episode.
