It's worth mentioning that ARTPOP opened with numbers that were completely on pair with Perry and Cyrus and could've had the same success as both of their albums if not bigger with the right promotion, but it seemed like, she wasn't as enthusiastic or interested after she sold 258k first week in the US and 550k WW. As proof we can take iTunes Festival and artRave perfromance - both great and both BEFORE the numbers were announced.
I think she expected more and wasn't aware that BTW really damaged her image. I'm sure there were some talks that she should make an album full of upbeat dance tracks like ARTPOP, to make it look like she's here to regain her GP kingdom after alienating BTW era, but I'm sure she wasn't aware that it has gone so far that she would have to acutally go out and promote the hell of ARTPOP to make it sell better. Instead, she seems like she's offended, not disappointed, offended.
She's obviously not over ARTPOP. Just today (my time zone LOL) she posted selfies and tagged them #ARTPOP and it's truly the only thing that keeps me believing that there is something around the corner. And I truly hope so, beacuse this album is, FOR ME, by far the best album she ever recorded.
Sorry for the rant.

It must be damn tough to face the amount of negativity she does, and artists are notoriously sensitive because they're offering something they've created up for judgement. So, I don't blame her for having a bruised ego and burying her head in the sand a wee bit. It's not that her success is poor, but expectation is so high.
It's obvious that she/her label underestimated the damage and what had to be done to combat it. Bar two co-writing credits, there are no hitmakers on ARTPOP which seems pretty complacent considering. I think she thought all she had to do was be less dark and now she's a bit taken a back that she isn't as on top of the Fame Game as she thought. Her people probably agreed until relatively late in the game (2013) and then decided she'd go urban just to be safe...getting Kendrick and Azealia on board, picking DWUW off the cutting floor and chucking R Kelly on it because his new album was coming out, creating JN'D and chucking on T.i, Twista and Too $hort.
I wouldn't be surprised if things got tense between her and Troy because of this creative meddling, but she went along with it thinking it'd help make ARTPOP a success, and when it didn't work...she and Troy really fought, resulting in her firing him or whatever. Her Dope love, to me, seems very 'FU' to him/interferers.
So, the resentment of all that combined with her being frustrated that in reality ART and POP struggle belonging together in the commercial world, has meant a distancing from the album (which isn't really what she wanted it to be - TFM's ravey little sister, anyone?!). Her #ARTPOP stuff and the return to the studio makes me think she's going to try again and make ART and POP work to prove her point. Who knows, though.

Okay, it's really not her best work but to have so many people on your side for them to just suddenly turn away in what everyone imagined would be a moment of glory is a terrible thing, especially if it comes off the back of something that she worked so hard to give and share with other people.

I would also say that she's probably frustrated that she tried in so many ways to give fans what they wanted, and then they turned around and spat on it. I get the impression ARTPOP became increasingly about pandering more than making what she truly wanted to make.
