In between lackluster performances from the 2014 Grammy Awards, the newest trailer from Disney’s Maleficent aired and it might be safe to say that it was the best performance of the night thus far. The trailer opened with a haunting version of the Sleeping Beauty original song “Once Upon a Dream,” only this time it didn’t have the timbre of a happy-go-lucky bubblegum princess. It was dark, creepy, and sung beautifully by the rising queen of film theme songs, Lana Del Rey.
Then we spotted Angelina Jolie on the screen, but the movie star was almost unrecognizable with a face painted emerald and carved out by contouring that is far superior to any New Jersey beauty guru’s YouTube tutorial. Her cat-eye contacts could pierce any soul and were scary enough to bring on frightened tears from even the toughest of biker dudes.
