Coven isn't terribly over hyped, it is still a solid entry in Ryan's series.

Extremely. I had high expectations for this season with Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett and the others returning. But the season is just all over the place. I cringe when people say this season is better than Asylum.

It boggles the mind that anyone likes Coven. It's easily the worst season of AHS and only appeals to the Tumblr demographic.
My issues with the season are too long to list but my main one is how many useless characters this season has:

Zoe, Zombie Boy, Queenie and the Ax Man have all been wastes of space, used maybe once or twice to further the plot but that's it.

The only time it gets overrated is when people thinks it's being sincere; I cringe every time I see someone call it scary. It's terrible, but it KNOWS it's terrible. That camp factor is what makes it so great.

Asylum, however, had a few legitimately fantastic moments of television in addition to the camp. Murder House was just plain bad, and not in a knowing way.

People try making it out to be totally awful now when it's certainly not. It's not the best season but it's not the worst.

It has an amazing set, theme, actresses and overall vibe/look.

The story/writing is terrible but the actresses make it watchable and still a very entertaining show.

It could've been absolutely amazing though, which makes it a little disappointing.

The difference being that Fiona and LaLaurie further the plot, while the pedophile and Christian neighbor do not. Doing a 13-episode arc is like writing a short story: every detail should be important.

Nah I certainly don't think it's awful, there have been plenty of entertaining moments. But from a storytelling perspective, it's just not as strong as I know AHS is capable of

I can't myself re-watching it too often like Asylum and Murder House.

A bit too much style over substance this year tbh.

Asylum > Murder House > Coven in terms of compelling story telling, acting, characters and a cohesive plot. I feel like the theme, witchcraft, in this case, was poorly explored and explained. However, even though Coven has it's faults, I still find it somewhat enjoyable. It's fun, I'll give you that.

YES. I hate it passionately. Horrible + messy storyline, characters aren't developed, not even slightly scary, etc etc. Worst season by far. Will never rewatch it.

Not gory? How about the aftermath of the bus crash? Putting Kylestein back together? Misty going all Dr. Doolittle on those Croc hunters? Pretty much every scene involving Lalaurie? Weekend at Madison's? The Weave shop shooting? The Axeman Boardroom massacre? Lalaurie cutting Marie into pieces while she's screaming curse words at her? Fiona getting literally Axed from the show?

With just the first 3 examples it already outgores pretty much all the other seasons.

Oh and you petty Murder House stans just want to say its for the flaming old Queens and has NO horror are just looking past all the actual horror that's been in the show, just to point out the bitchy one liners and catfights. This season involved the torture and killing of slaves, a bus crash full of young lives, putting back together a guy from different body parts of his friends, said guy being sexually molested by his mother. A Minotaur raping a Witch, a Serial Killer from the early 1900's, countless cuthroat murder scenes, The presence of a Voodoo Deity that requests the souls of newborn babies and etc.

I still like it, I think a lot of the dialogue is brilliant, but something about Coven just truly captivated me, and I consider it on of the best seasons of a show that I've ever seen.
