I'm not sure what the problem is... Gaga's image? Then how did Applause, a weirder and weaker song, manage to stay in the top 10 for months? Maybe people didn't like DWUW quite as much as we thought they would. It's a shame since it's one of my favorites ever and really screamed "huge hit" to me

And it did have a nice amount of promo, but it was quite messy overall. Applause's was all timely and consistent (the Kia commercial was on for weeks, meanwhile I never actually saw the Beats commercial). After the Voice performance, it hit #11 on iTunes again---so close, yet they did nothing to take advantage of its temporary popularity.

Oh well. In the end, I'm still happy I got one of her best songs ever AND the amazing Xtina remix

Disagree on Applause being a weaker song. Applause is annoyingly underrated for its instrumental and really well structured hooks. It had two big factors that hit it - Miley stealing the VMAs and Roar stealing the "new era" limelight.

No music video to help with the streaming points and the fact she released her worst performing lead single before this and is currently in her worst performing era so far.

Bad timing and the messiness of this era overall. It's still a hit so nothing to complain about.

I don't think the lack of a music video is an excuse because songs can smash an even reach #1 without a music video.

Oh no, I still think Applause is a great, underrated song, just (in my subjective view) not as amazing as DWUW. And what you said about it being hit by Miley and Katy is true, which is how I find it even more surprising it spent so long in the top 10 with lyrics like "one second I'm a koons..."

The song is pure GAGA, yet everyone thinks Gaga's image is hurting her. Now I'm not sure what to think--Gaga needs to branch out, but when she tries to do something really different (DWUW, Y&I which performed okay but not stellar), the public still doesn't seem as interested

If the remix would've been ready to release the night of the voice performance with the music video following shortly after, it would've been a top 10 on lock. Radio might have decided to spin it even more as well, a lot of times music video releases lead radio to jump on to the song.

Slow doesn't mean boring but I agree that DWUW is far from being boring. It's Gaga's best song in a long time. I love it

Probably poor planning. I think Applause was still going strong when DWUW was released and not planned to be a single, then it was switched to be a single.

The song was more well received than Applause, understandably, and R Kelly being on it didn't really mean **** besides people making pee jokes. A video would have helped too, so it might have been that. And obviously Gaga's image has been kinda ruined so that could have been why.
