This. I think streaming is more reliable to show when a song/album is really popular.
Crazy fans will download your single on the first week and make it chart high, even when the song sucks, but people only stream a song - in general - when the song is actually good.

It has more to do with repeat streaming.

If a song is good, a subscriber might add it to his/her playlist. And it will be played again and again over the course of time.

If a song is bad, it won't get repeat business.

This will force all the music labels to invest in QUALITY music. Ones that will have repeat business.

Spotify is the #2 source of music sales for the music labels worldwide. (store wise)

Itunes is #1 of course (store wise) and by a large margin too.

I'm pretty sure Amazon is #3.

Digital track sales this past week totaled 23.7 million downloads, down 2% compared with last week (24.1 million) and down 11% stacked next to the comparable week of 2013 (26.7 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 104 million, down 12% compared with the same total at this point last year (117.9 million).

Streaming does not really generate much revenue for the artists though. It is just the middle-men like Spotify who are cashing in on it.

Spotify pays 70% of its revenue as royalties. The same as Itunes.

How much do you think Spotify should pay? 75%? 80%? 85%?

And Spotify hasn't turn a profit yet.

Streaming music won't help album sales rise.

People need to release good music in the beginning of the year it's the only way that the digital competition can keep up. Literally nothing stellar has been released this year so far it's been really slow in comparison to 2013 :/

This, but also, streaming is becoming more and more popular. The streaming age is coming.
