I still love Applause as a song and body of work, but I don't agree with it being the lead single from ARTPOP at all. I really don't know how they went about deciding Applause was ever the best option
That is precisely the frightening thing. It is one of her best ever, and she could not transform it into a hit. Makes you think what song is needed for her to have a hit in 2014.
It's kind of funny that my intention was to leave before Applause came out to avoid that happening to me. And yet I ended up staying positive about the whole ordeal and others well..... not so much!

Well, to be fair it's one of the few viable singles on ARTPOP It would have to be a single eventually.
DWUW (solo or feat Xtina) would've made an awesome lead single tbh. It could've been a huge hit with Applause's hype, promo, music video timeliness, etc.
Really her only bet at this point. It is better than DWUW and a perfect song for driving so I see some potential, but I cannot help but think there is a larger problem at hand here that she needs to address if she wants to remain commercially viable in the current market...

It is the best song on the album, so I see why they chose it first.

She does need to get her edge back, but we can only really move forward from here. In a sense I feel like she isn't as hungry for that success like she used to be. Or I could just be imagining things.
R. Kelly's verse on DWUW fits so perfectly for the song but i can't listen to it anymore bc i really hate him. she really should've done the song with some other R&B singer. i feel like Frank Ocean could've fit but i kind of stan him so i might be a little biased.
i'm also kind of bitter that we never got a studio solo version of the song. i like xtina but her version of the song wasn't that amazing imo.

Oh really.
She clearly has given up on the ARTPOP era being a success, which is disheartening to see as it still had some potential. She really pissed me off though by not releasing a video for DWUW.
