All of them have strengths and weaknesses. But I wouldn't say any of them could be called "the songwriter of our generation"...

I liked Avril's first 2 albums lyrically.

Taylor writes like a child.

All Too Well, Dear John, State of Grace, Sad Beautiful Tragic, Begin Again, Treacherous, Last Kiss, Innocent, Enchanted, Back To December, Eyes Open. And all those were written soely on her own

Taylor and Avril hands down.

The one who actually can write something other that songs/half-arsed poems and got her essay published & praised by mainstream media, Beyoncé.

Gaga tbh (or at least when she made cute bops i.e. during TF and TFM era). Avril and Taylor (specifically Taylor) are very limited.

Gaga's lyrics have always been cheesy and lack creativity and intelligence, lets be real. Other than "Bloody Mary," which is literally lyrical genius, the rest of her discography is kind of... jejune Her melodies are great, though.

Avril has a TON of potential in terms of songwriting: "I'm With You" & "Innocence" and "Goodbye" are all simplistic yet effortlessly beautiful. Simple lyrics she pulls off with such beauty BUT, Avril needs to find that inspiration again because...

Taylor Swift defeats these two girls to the ground. Yeah, she has her moments where childishness turns into catchy Pop but she's a pure lyricist and it makes up for her lack of vocal talent: check "State Of Grace" "All Too Well" especially, "Holy Ground" "You're Not Sorry" "White Horse" "Enchanted" DAMN her songwriting is like Dr Luke and Max Martin masterful. She should write hits for other artists tbh

but Taylor's self written songs are more mature than avril's self written "you ain't seen nothing yet" but taylor is improving her improvement is RED

Gaga has always been #edgy. Her melodies & lyrics during TF & TFM are actually great. But these days? ew.

Can't talk much about Avril and her mall-punk/pop-punk arse because I'm against anything pop-punk.

Bad comparison for Taylor. And bad examples from Her catalogue. Melody wise, She could be compared to those doctors, but she's a bit basic to be put on their level. Lyrically, She's way too wordy to be compared to those song doctors and who public see as Her contemporaries. And actually, Her songwriting style up to LP4 was Country to a degree when you bring it down to just Her and Her guitar. LP4 is where She's playing up with songwriting style & structure.

I love Tay but her lyrics are too basic

TAYLOR without a doubt. She's totally brilliant. Everything in her songs clicks perfectly... the melodies, the lyrics, how her songs build themselves up, everything.

Her lyrics alone >>>> She's so good at capturing all the little details that make life so colorful. Especially when she gets super specific--leaving her scarf at an ex's sister's house, certain days of the week, etc. The mistake many songwriters make is trying to keep their songs general so that they're "relatable," but Taylor makes her songs so relatable by including seemingly insignificant details. Even if the specific details of her life aren't the same as yours, you have your own little inside jokes, memories that stand out for no particular reason, whatever... that's what makes her songs feel like they could be about your own life.
