That's 'cause folks don't do the education. The banjo itself was brought to America by African slaves; it was created based off of an African instrument. Soul music (starting with the blues) and country have the same background. The poor white farmers/field workers and slaves/freed black sharecroppers would often play together in their down time.
That's why the overall thematic tone of both tends to be very simple and relatable -- they'll often talk hard times and struggle, realistic relationship songs like no good cheatin' men/women etc. Country is very soulful.
Ditto on the Taylor thing. I don't get her popularity among the country set; I respect her ability to write and compose, but her vocals are so lackluster for country.
